Ask every provider for the same four things. Get its written fee list. Ask what is included in each figure. Ask what is not included. Ask who does the work. Then compare the answers line by line. This method works in every country, whatever the local rules say.
Start with the listing. Check the address and phone number. Visit the provider's own website if it has one. Look for a published fee list there. Listings on this site link to the provider's own list where one is published. A provider with no published list can still be good, but you must ask for figures in writing.
Call or visit two or three providers. Say what you need in plain words: direct cremation, cremation with a service, or burial. Ask each one for the same items. Ask for the total in writing, with third-party payments shown apart. Ask what happens if plans change. Ask who will care for the person who died and where they will rest.
Compare the written answers. Match each line across providers. Add third-party payments into each total. Note what each list leaves out. A provider that answers clearly and quickly is showing you how it will treat you later.
Check special needs early. If you need a faith tradition served, ask who on the team has done it before. If you need another language, ask who speaks it. If the person who died must travel across a border, ask whether the provider handles repatriation papers itself or passes the work on.
Read reviews with care. One angry review proves little. A pattern of the same complaint over months means more. Check how the provider answers complaints. A calm, specific reply is a good sign.
Trust your own sense too. The person who takes your call is the service you are buying. Clear answers, no pressure and everything in writing matter more than a polished website. If a provider rushes you, adds items you did not ask for, or will not put figures on paper, walk away. There is always another provider.
