What an advance plan can fix
Judge an advance funeral plan. Lesson 1, 15 min.
Paying in advance can fix today's figure for the director's own services. It cannot fix everything. Read the plan document for the exact split between what is fixed and what is not.
Three ways people plan ahead
- A prepaid funeral plan names a provider and a set of services.
- Funeral insurance pays out a sum of money when it is needed.
- A savings account in your own name keeps full control but fixes nothing.
Each type suits a different family. None of them is right for everyone. This course does not tell you which one to pick.
What is usually not fixed
Third-party payments, such as crematorium or cemetery fees, are usually paid at the prices of the day. A plan that fixes the director's own fees may leave these open. Ask which payments the plan covers.
Write the split down
Make two lists from the plan document.
- What the plan fixes.
- What the plan leaves open.
Use the same blocks as in a fee list: the director's own fee, goods and services, third-party payments and extras. If the document does not say, ask the seller in writing.
Ask the seller, not the brochure
A brochure is a sales document. The plan document sets the terms. Ask for the document before you pay. Read all of it.
