Ask for the same four things

Compare funeral quotes line by line. Lesson 1, 12 min.

Use the same four requests with every provider. Then the answers are easy to compare.

The four requests

  1. Ask for the written fee list.
  2. Ask what each figure includes.
  3. Ask what the list leaves out.
  4. Ask who does the work.

Also ask for the total in writing, with third-party payments shown apart. Ask what happens if plans change. Ask who will care for the person who died and where they will rest.

How many providers

Two or three is enough for most families. Say what you need in plain words: direct cremation, cremation with a service, or burial. Use the same words with each provider.

Start with the listing

Check the address and phone number on the listing. Visit the provider's own website. Look for a published fee list there. A provider with no published list can still be a good provider. You then ask for the figures in writing.

Keep records

Keep a copy of every list and quote. If a figure changes later, your copy shows what was offered. Write down the date and the name of each person you spoke to.

Phone answers and paper answers

A phone answer helps you prepare. The written list or quote is the record. Ask for the written version before you decide.
